Chapter 4

Not only had they watched the sun set, it was about to rise again by the time Melissa got home. Oh, she’d pay for that later, but her happy endorphins got her to work and clocked in just as morning report was starting. But after that, with Courtney off that day, the hours dragged and it was all Melissa could do to stay awake. One of her patients was transferred out to receive ECMO treatments at another facility, and her remaining patients were reasonably stable. It was actually possible to take a lunch and Melissa stumbled into the break room.

“What’s up with you, girl? Earlier in the week you were bouncing all over the place and today you look like a whipped puppy.” Angie eyed Melissa suspiciously when she plunked down heavily in the furthest chair from Angie, trying to maintain a reasonably safe distance. Angie shook her head as Melissa pulled a package of store-bought peanut butter crackers out of her pocket. “And that’s all you’re having for lunch? No fresh veggies?”

“Um, I overslept and didn’t have time to pack anything. I just grabbed these at the gift shop.”

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but you don’t look like too much sleep is your problem. Or did you not have time for makeup, either?”

“Not everybody can look like a fashion model all the time the way you can.”

“Pooh! You’re naturally gorgeous and you know it! It took me years to perfect my eyeliner technique, and you don’t even need it. But seriously, what’s going on? You’ve been acting weird all this week and I want to know why.”

“Oh, Angie. I don’t know.” Melissa took a big drink of her bottled water, also from the gift shop. “I’m pretty sure I’m being a complete idiot. But I can’t seem to help it!”

“Courtney?”

“Shit! Is it that obvious?”

“Not to everyone, but I know you. I’ve seen you infatuated before, but this time it looks like it’s mutual.”

Melissa sat up straighter in her chair. “Do you really think so?”

“Have you checked your phone today?”

“Not in the last hour.” She pulled it out of her scrubs pocket. “Oh. Oh!”

“I rest my case. Now I’ll leave you alone to drool over whatever it is she said that put that goofy look on your face.” Angie cleared away her lunch mess, put her mask back on, and headed back out to the unit.

11:03 am: Hey, lady. Just wondering how your day is going.

11:27 am: Do you have any plans for tonight? I promise I won’t keep you out all night, but wouldn’t mind a certain dinner companion again if you’re up to it. Let me know.

12:15 am: Too busy for a lunch break? Hope they’re not killing you today. Miss you.

The last one came in just five minutes earlier. She started typing.

Sorry, first chance I’ve gotten to check my phone. Let me see if I’m free and I’ll get back to you.

That didn’t sound right. Who has plans these days? Delete.
